Tidigt på morgonen den 30 november 1939 korsade sovjetiska styrkor gränsen mellan Sovjet och Finland. Vinterkriget var ett faktum, ett krig som ledningen i Moskva med diktatorn Josef Stalin i spetsen väntade sig snabbt vinna. Så blev det inte. Sovjet anföll Finland på bred front. Invasionsförsöket skedde under falsk förevändning av att finländska styrkor skulle ha beskjutit grannens territorium. Den finländska statsledningen var inte oförberedd på sovjetisk aggression, men landets försvar stod svagt rustat.Vad göra? Jo, försvara sig med list och rörlighet i de snötäckta skogarna där den sovjetiska krigsmaskinen kom rullande på vägar, med vagt begrepp om var eller när de vitklädda, skidburna och numerärt underlägsna finländarna skulle slå till.
Kraftmätningen i och kring lilla byn Suomussalmi i östra delen av mellersta Finland, i höjd med kuststaden Uleåborg, utkämpades mellan den 7 december 1939 och den 8 januari 1940 och resulterade i en förkrossande finländsk seger, en av flera triumfer för Finlands trupper under inledningen av det två och en halv månader långa kriget. Den sovjetiska strategin var att skära av Finland på dess smalaste ställe. Suomussalmi, beläget strax väster om gränsen, ligger cirka tolv mil från Uleåborg och ryssarna tänkte sig att snabbt tränga fram ända till kuststaden vid Bottenviken. Men de båda divisionerna, omfattande cirka 36.000 man, kom aldrig längre än till Suomussalmi.
Överste Hjalmar Siilasvuos till antalet underlägsna trupper lyckades ringa in fienden. I sträng kyla bekämpade man fienden framgångsrikt med ”mottitaktik” och den 7 januari 1940 var nederlaget ett faktum för de sovjetiska divisionerna. Mottitaktiken gick ut på att agera så att motståndarens trupper delades upp i mindre isolerade styrkor, mottier (finska för mått, en term inom skogsbruket), som därefter nedkämpades en i sänder. Först brände finlänadarna ner Suomussalmi, för att beröva Röda armén skydd mot kölden när byn kort efter intogs. Försvararna drog sig undan över istäckta sjöar.
De första sovjetiska anfallen misslyckades helt. Vid en annan sammandrabbning led finländarna stora förluster, utan att något sovjetiskt avancemang västerut följde. Den 24 december gjorde ryssarna ett nytt försök med ett anfall mot inringade finländska styrkor. Genombrottet uteblev. I stället anföll finländarna, efter att ha fått förstärkningar, några dagar senare. Man återtog byn och de sovjetiska trupperna flydde fältet.
Mellan den 4 och 7 januari lyckades finländarna med mottitaktiken splittra den sovjetiska styrkan i flera isolerade grupper, som sedan efterhand nedkämpades, en i sänder. Förlusterna har inte kunnat beräknas exakt, men Röda armén förlorade minst 23.000 man i stupade, ihjälfrusna och fångar, förutom mängder av materiel i slaget om Suomussalmi. De finländska förlusterna uppgick till 2.100 man, varav 900 stupade eller saknade. Utgången av slaget fick stor psykologisk betydelse. Liknande segrar, bland annat vid Tolvajärvi och Ägläjärvi norr om sjön Ladoga, visade att de tungfotade sovjetiska divisionerna var dåligt förberedda på vad uppdraget i främmande land egentligen fordrade.
Framgången i Suomussalmi meförde att den redan höga stridsmoralen bland de finländska soldaterna stärktes ytterligare. Att sedan den sovjetiska övermakten ändå tvingade det lilla Finland till en fred på hårda villkor, undertecknad av statsminister Risto Ryti i Moskva den 12 mars 1940, får ses som en oundviklig eftergift i ett betydligt större politiskt sammanhang än det som gällde förhållandet mellan det stora Sovjet och det lilla Finland. Den oheliga Molotov-Ribbentrop-pakten mellan Nazi-Tyskland och det kommunistiska Sovjetunionen gällde fortfarande. Läget blev ett helt annat när Hitlers armeer i juni 1941 marscherade österut.
De fortsatta striderna mellan Finland och Sovjet – fortsättningskriget juni 1941–september 1944 – byggde till stor del på dessa förändrade förutsättningar. Oaktat andra följder visade Finland vid krigsslutet på nytt att man lyckats hindra Röda armén från att fullfölja sin befälhavare Josef Stalins order om att erövra ett grannland.

( 3 / 1012 ) Äntligen - i nästa vecka startas partikelacceleratorn vid CERN åter efter att ha stått stilla i ett år. Strax efter starten den 9 september 2008 läckte helium in i tunneln där experimenten utförs och hela anläggningen fick stängas av. Nu vill forskarna återuppta sökandet efter svaren på några av universums gåtor. Bland annat hoppas man hitta den så kallade Higgs-partikeln som – om den finns – kan sitta fastklistrad på alla andra partiklar och kanske kan vara den som ger partiklarna massa.För att hitta Higgs-partikeln låter man andra partiklar, protoner som finns i atomernas kärnor, frontalkrocka som två bilar i ett krocktest. Förhoppningen är att den hittills osynliga Higgs-partikeln, likt en dold skruv som legat oupptäckt i handskfacket, ska fara ut och visa sig efter kollisionen.
Trots att ingen har sett den så tror de flesta forskare att Higgs-partikeln verkligen finns. Och om den finns så borde Cerns enorma accelerator kunna hitta den även om ingen tror att det kommer att gå fort, det kan nog dröja några år än innan man kommit den på spåren.

It just occured to me, watching a picture of Joakim 6 months old, that William looks almost like him. Or what do you think? Joakim's skin was very white in his early life as can be seen here but apart from that you can really tell they are brothers. William is also 6 months now.

( 3 / 288 ) På tisdag finns det möjlighet att få se några extra ljusstarka stjärnfall rita linjer på natthimlen. Då har meteorsvärmen tauriderna sitt maximum. Tauriderna är namnet på en samling rymdstenar som liksom jorden cirklar i en bana runt solen. I början av november varje år rör sig jordklotet in i det område där antalet stenar och gruskorn är som störst. Detta får till följd att många av dem kolliderar med jorden och sedan brinner upp i atmosfären. Det är då som vi kan se dem som små lysande stjärnfall.Gruset som faller över oss syns som bäst på kvällen den 3 november och på kvällen den 13 november. En del av stenarna kan vara upp till några meter stora och tappades en gång av kometen Encke i sin bana runt solen. När de slutligen krockar med jorden gör de det med en hastighet av 27 meter per sekund. Vad man kan hoppas på är att få se när någon av de större stenarna brinner upp. De största kan se ut som kulor av eld och väcker en hel del uppmärksamhet.
Namnet tauriderna kommer sig av att meteorerna ser ut att ha sin utgångspunkt i stjärnbilden Oxen (Taurus på latin) när de störtar in mot jorden. Så fram med varma kläder och kikare och gå ut och titta efter stjärnfallet.

( 3 / 2258 ) Många blandar ihop Halloween och Alla helgons dag men det är inte samma sak. Halloween firas alltid 31/10 medan Alla helgons dag är en rörlig helgdag som infaller på lördagen under tiden mellan 31 oktober och 6 november.Ursprungligen var Alla helgons dag en fast helgdag den 1 november men vid en helgdagsreform år 1772 ändrades detta till att istället vara första söndagen i november. Första november förlorade då sin status som helgdag men behöll ändå sin benämning i almanackan. Sedan dess har det alltså de flesta år funnits två skilda dagar med denna beteckning. Efter motioner i riksdagen om öka antalet helgdagar under hösten flyttades Alla helgons dag år 1953 från sitt tidigare plats till dagen innan, och blev samtidigt allmän helgdag (lördag var annars en arbetsdag på den tiden). Samtidigt ändrades namnet på 1 november till att vara Allhelgonadagen.
Dagen före Alla helgons dag kallas allhelgonaafton eller möjligen alla helgons afton. I anglosaxiska länder firas denna dag som halloween - en förvrängning av det ursprungliga All Hallows Eve - med barnupptåg av olika slag, en sed som under senare år vunnit viss spridning även i Sverige. Halloween firas på den ursprungliga allhelgonaaftonen, dvs. den 31 oktober. Kopplingen till Alla helgons dag har dock gjort detta datum något osäkert, och det förekommer på många håll att man istället firar halloween på fredagen före denna helg.
Alla helgons dag är traditionellt en dag i Sverige då man minns sina döda i stillhet. Det uppskattas inte (speciellt av äldre) om det kommer barn och ringer på då. Trevlig helg

( 3 / 4453 ) Wow, this is my third post today. Anyway, tomorrow on October 27 is a milestone to US space exploration and space program. For the first time in almost 30 years NASA will launch a new-developed rocket, the Ares I-X. This vehicle will be used in future space programs together with Ares V and Orion to replace the Space shuttle and make future missions to the moon possible.The Ares I will be a two-stage rocket but this test launch will run the first stage only and the second stage is not yet qualified for test launch. Instead there will be a lot of instruments to collect data with a mock up of the remaining rocket to have the actual configuration in place. The first will burn for aprox 2 minutes and the fall down to the Atlantic Ocean where it will be recovered.
The liftoff took place on Oct 28, 11.24am EDT (4.24pm GMT+1).

GeoCities was founded in 1994 and was one of the first services offering an easy to use interface, which allowed 'mum and dad' users to publish their own websites easily.GeoCities was considered revolutionary for its time, being one of the first free hosting services on the internet and one of the first to sort domains via their topic, e.g. finance, travel or fashion. Unfortunately, as the popularity of GeoCities took off the topics available for hosting became many, and the site increased in complexity. The purchase of GeoCities by Yahoo in 1999 only served to make this growing problem even greater. By April 2009, Yahoo ceased accepting new registrations for the GeoCities service. In June, the company announced that the service would finally be closed in October this year. That day has come.

( 3 / 3814 ) Igår gick jag på derby på Råsunda och såg AIK slå Hammarby med 2-1. Det var evigheter sedan jag såg fotboll live senast, och detta var mitt andra besök på Råsunda så det blir inte så ofta. Men när det kostar så pass mycket som 400 kr att gå kan det inte bli ofta...Förra gången var hösten 1985. Jag hade precis flyttat till Stockholm och gick för att se Sverige-Västtyskland spela VM-kval. Jag stod på ena kortsidan och när första halvlek var slut hade jag från nära håll sett två bollar rulla imål och Västtyskland ledde med 2-0. Sverige behövde minst oavgjort för att ha en chance att gå till VM så chanserna var små nu.
Men så gjorde Dan Corneliusson 2-1 och hoppet tändes. Trots många chanser stod det dock fortfarande 2-1 efter 90 min. Då kommer Mats Magnusson in, Sverige får till ett anfall till och Torbjörn Nilsson får fram en stickare till Mats som gör 2-2. Maken till jubel får man leta eftet och hela publikhavet föll rakt ner mot målet. Så småningom dabbade sig Sverige mot Tjeckoslovakien så det blev inget VM ändå.
Derbyt då? Jodå, det var en riktigt bra match, Hammarby bjöd upp till dans i synnerhet i andra halvlek. Men till slut drog AIK det längsta strået och är nära SM guld nu medans Hammarby ligger sist i Allsvenskan. Vi får se på onsdag hur det går för de båda.

Windows boot screens aren't exactly a scientific representation of the performance of each version of Windows, but the sea changes in the move to Windows 95 and then to XP are clear, while Vista's blank space probably said more than we ever knew at the time about how the OS would be received. Anyway, on with the (slide)show!Windows 1.0
From 20 November 1985, here's the first Windows boot screen featuring the old Microsoft logo. Key fact: you couldn't overlap windows in this version - they were all tiled. Interestingly, Microsoft still supported Windows 1.0 until the end of December 2001. Seriously.
Windows 2.1
While an earlier version (2.03) emerged in 1987, it wasn't until 1988 that Windows 2.1 properly arrived, in the form of the 286 and 386 versions. The not-so-different boot screen also features the new Microsoft logo. The first versions of Word and Excel ran on Windows 2.0. You could also overlap windows. Which was good.
Windows 3.0
Into the nineties and Windows 3.0 shows plenty of signs of graphical improvement - indeed the graphics were much improved from 2.x. The MS-DOS Executive file manager was replaced with the Program Manager (which remained a feature of Windows 3.1).
Windows 3.1
The first version to include Minesweeper, Windows 3.1 (codenamed Janus) was released in 1992 and contained advanced personalisation and featured 32-bit disk access. It also introduced the Windows flag to the boot screen for the first time.
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Windows for Workgroups saw the light of day in October 1992 and featured native network support and sharing. It was an essential for business back in the early nineties. I don't know about you, but these boot screens look almost like a step back from Windows 3.0!
Windows 95
Introducing the clouds! Windows 95 (codenamed Chicago) was a great leap forward in terms of productivity and introduced THE INTERNET, albeit in limited fashion. It was seriously better looking than earlier versions of Windows and was seriously successful as a result. It laid the graphical foundations (if not the codebase) for the Windows we still use today.
Windows NT
1996's Windows NT became a staple of companies worldwide until it was replaced by the mighty Windows 2000. From memory, it really wasn't that stable, but had great security features.
Windows 98
June 1998 saw the release of Windows 98, an OS with a surprising number of users even today. Continuing the clouds theme from Windows 95, Windows 98 introduced improved USB support through the 1999 Second Edition and ushered in the Windows Driver Model.
Windows 2000
Truly a version of Windows to look back on with fondness. Like NT, Windows 2000 has a long industrial legacy. Though you'll find Windows XP running most businesses today, Windows 2000 is still used widely.
Windows Me
So you thought Windows Vista filled you with anger? You obviously didn't use Windows ME, an operating system that emerged in 2000. It included several improvements from Windows 2000 but otherwise it was rubbish - like its boot screen.
Windows XP
2001's Windows XP (codenamed Whistler) brought improved security and robustness by moving across to the NT codebase, incorporating huge driver support and releasing both Home and Professional editions. In 2006, IDC believed there were over 400 million copies in use.
Windows Vista
Yeah, it's interesting isn't it? God knows what Microsoft was thinking, but it only succeeded in making this crap-looking and basic screen. It probably wanted to save on boot-up time or something.
Windows 7
Windows 7 introduces this animation, which appears before the log-in screen, but once again there's no boot screen in the traditional sense. But it does look really quite nice, as does Windows 7 itself.
