With Windows 7 being released next Thursday, it's time to take a quick look back at the good, bad and downright ugly boot screens. Windows boot screens aren't exactly a scientific representation of the performance of each version of Windows, but the sea changes in the move to Windows 95 and then to XP are clear, while Vista's blank space probably said more than we ever knew at the time about how the OS would be received. Anyway, on with the (slide)show!Windows 1.0
From 20 November 1985, here's the first Windows boot screen featuring the old Microsoft logo. Key fact: you couldn't overlap windows in this version - they were all tiled. Interestingly, Microsoft still supported Windows 1.0 until the end of December 2001. Seriously.
Windows 2.1
While an earlier version (2.03) emerged in 1987, it wasn't until 1988 that Windows 2.1 properly arrived, in the form of the 286 and 386 versions. The not-so-different boot screen also features the new Microsoft logo. The first versions of Word and Excel ran on Windows 2.0. You could also overlap windows. Which was good.
Windows 3.0
Into the nineties and Windows 3.0 shows plenty of signs of graphical improvement - indeed the graphics were much improved from 2.x. The MS-DOS Executive file manager was replaced with the Program Manager (which remained a feature of Windows 3.1).
Windows 3.1
The first version to include Minesweeper, Windows 3.1 (codenamed Janus) was released in 1992 and contained advanced personalisation and featured 32-bit disk access. It also introduced the Windows flag to the boot screen for the first time.
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Windows for Workgroups saw the light of day in October 1992 and featured native network support and sharing. It was an essential for business back in the early nineties. I don't know about you, but these boot screens look almost like a step back from Windows 3.0!
Windows 95
Introducing the clouds! Windows 95 (codenamed Chicago) was a great leap forward in terms of productivity and introduced THE INTERNET, albeit in limited fashion. It was seriously better looking than earlier versions of Windows and was seriously successful as a result. It laid the graphical foundations (if not the codebase) for the Windows we still use today.
Windows NT
1996's Windows NT became a staple of companies worldwide until it was replaced by the mighty Windows 2000. From memory, it really wasn't that stable, but had great security features.
Windows 98
June 1998 saw the release of Windows 98, an OS with a surprising number of users even today. Continuing the clouds theme from Windows 95, Windows 98 introduced improved USB support through the 1999 Second Edition and ushered in the Windows Driver Model.
Windows 2000
Truly a version of Windows to look back on with fondness. Like NT, Windows 2000 has a long industrial legacy. Though you'll find Windows XP running most businesses today, Windows 2000 is still used widely.
Windows Me
So you thought Windows Vista filled you with anger? You obviously didn't use Windows ME, an operating system that emerged in 2000. It included several improvements from Windows 2000 but otherwise it was rubbish - like its boot screen.
Windows XP
2001's Windows XP (codenamed Whistler) brought improved security and robustness by moving across to the NT codebase, incorporating huge driver support and releasing both Home and Professional editions. In 2006, IDC believed there were over 400 million copies in use.
Windows Vista
Yeah, it's interesting isn't it? God knows what Microsoft was thinking, but it only succeeded in making this crap-looking and basic screen. It probably wanted to save on boot-up time or something.
Windows 7
Windows 7 introduces this animation, which appears before the log-in screen, but once again there's no boot screen in the traditional sense. But it does look really quite nice, as does Windows 7 itself.

Så var det då äntligen dax för helg igen! Imorgon ska vi ha en liten bjudning hemma eftersom Fali fyllde år i veckan men på söndag har vi inget särskilt planerat. Blir väl kanske att städa upp och göra iordning efter festen på lördag... :pHösten har kommit med besked nu och det är minusgrader varenda natt. I veckan som gick kom det t o m några snöflingor en dag och vinterjacka, mössa, halsduk och handskar har kommit fram. Senare idag ska jag klippa håret och det känns dumt nu när man har nytta av långt hår men så är det när man planerar dåligt.

The ribosome 'reads' DNA and translates the code to make the body's tens of thousands of different proteins, thus building and controlling life at the chemical level.
The researchers used a method called X-ray crystallography to pinpoint the position of hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome.

He carefully calculated how to transmit light over long distances via optical glass fibers. With a fiber of purest glass it would be possible to transmit light signals over 100 kilometers, compared to only 20 meters for the fibers available in the 1960s. Today's telephony and computer technology is very much based on this discovery, as fiber optics became the bread and butter for surface base broadband commuications.
In 1969 Willard Boyle and George Smith invented the first successful imaging technology using a digital sensor, a CCD (Charge-Coupled Device). Digital photography has become an irreplaceable tool in many fields since and the invention can today be found in digital cameras and space technology.

The prize is shared by Elizabeth Blackburn , Carol Greider and Jack Szostak , USA "for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase".The three scientists have solved a major problem in biology: how the chromosomes can be copied in a complete way during cell divisions and how they are protected against degradation. They have shown that the solution is to be found in the ends of the chromosomes the telomeres — and in an enzyme that forms them — telomerase.
The long, threadlike DNA molecules that carry our genes are packed into chromosomes, the telomeres being the caps on their ends. Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack Szostak discovered that a unique DNA sequence in the telomeres protects the chromosomes from degradation. Carol Greider and Blackburn identified telomerase, the enzyme that makes telomere DNA. These discoveries explained how the ends of the chromosomes are protected by the telomeres and that they are built by telomerase.
If the telomeres are shortened, cells age. Conversely, if telomerase activity is high, telomere length is maintained, and cellular senescence is delayed. This is the case in cancer cells, which can be considered to have eternal life. Certain inherited diseases, in contrast, are characterized by a defective telomerase, resulting in damaged cells. The award of the Nobel Prize recognizes the discovery of a fundamental mechanism in the cell, a discovery that has stimulated the development of new therapeutic strategies.

( 3 / 578 ) After a really warm - by Swedish standard anyway - autumn the cold has arrived, but it's really no surprice. September was wonderful and entering October we now have 5-7 degrees daytime. Last night the temperature went below zero for the first time this season. On the good side, it's very fresh outside, you really wake up if not already awake when you step out the door on your way to work. And the kids ask me every other day if it will snow tomorrow.Champions League continue this week with one or two upsets. For me and my fantasy team it went better then matchday 1. More points scored, better then average and gaining a few thousand points in the overall table. My heart tells me to put Ibrahimovic as my captain but for some reason he has problem scoring in CL, it was the same last year. Maybe I should change to Luis Fabiano instead, he seams to be going like a clock work. I manage to do some good transfers and that's good too. Hopefully, matchday 3 will continue that way - we will know more about that in two weeks or so.

Just getting tired from time to time that's all.William went 5 months the other day and Katharina started school. So much happening this autumn. September so far has been a lovely month with nice and resonably warm weather considering the season. I hope it stays like that.
Now I will take a rest until somebody wants to play with daddy again :)

The highlight this year apart from the World Cup qualification games will be Champions League which started this week.Like last year I entered a team into UEFA Fantasy Football competition and got an ok start. Not as good as last year when I scored 54 points but 42 is still not bad, and all my players scored points so I'm looking forward to the next round in two weeks.
Speaking of autumn, one can tell the summer is gone for this time now. It's colder outside, the trees are getting more and more yellow and the mornings are no more sunny. But the summer of 2009 was great and I feel refreshed for the autumn and winter to come. I think it will be a nice autumn as well, at least I hope so.

( 3 / 4564 ) After undergoing repair, Hubble is back online and is producing images that are both clear and the most detailed we have ever seen. The mission took place in May to update the aging telescope and essentially turned the 19 year old giant into a new beast that is much more capable. The repair mission added a new camera to the orbiting telescope. The new wide field camera 3 replaces the wide field camera 2. The new camera covers the visible spectrum and some of the near ultraviolet and infrared fields.
"With these two channels, WFC3 will achieve excellent panchromatic (full - spectrum) imaging. Stellar objects are not just in the visible spectrum, but also exist in the blue (near-UV) and red (near-IR) extremes. WFC3 was designed to study light in these regions of the spectrum better than Hubble's current capabilities."
Below are a few of the pictures that Hubble has sent back and they show some remarkable events occurring in Space.
"What resemble dainty butterfly wings are actually roiling cauldrons of gas heated to more than 20 000 degrees Celcius. The gas is tearing across space at more than 1 000 000 kilometers an hour -- fast enough to travel from Earth to the moon in 24 minutes!"

Globular clusters, ancient swarms of stars united by gravity, are the homesteaders of our Milky Way galaxy. The stars in Omega Centauri are between 10 billion and 12 billion years old. The cluster lies about 16,000 light-years from Earth."
"This image of barred spiral galaxy NGC 6217 is the first image of a celestial object taken with the new WFC3 camera.
